The COVID-19 pandemic has created a unique experience in which both clients and professionals share the same traumatic reality of the pandemic. What does it mean for professionals working under these circumstances, navigating relationships both virtually and then in person, trying to build relationships with children and families in a time of crisis? What do we know about from other experiences of shared traumatic realities and what can it teach us?

Trainer: Jessica Lawmaster, MSW

Jessica’s career began with stories. As a forensic interviewer early in her career in Oklahoma, she was on the receiving end of more than 700 accounts of abuse straight from the mouths of child victims. It was listening to these powerful stories that compelled her to study trauma through a broader lens. In 2008, Jessica packed up her belongings (and her dog) and moved to Alaska. She was hired to develop three new Children’s Advocacy Centers in the Kenai Peninsula region of Alaska. Developing child abuse response systems under the umbrella of Haven House, a domestic violence and sexual assault organization, provided Jessica with an optimal environment for continuing to connect the dots of the intersections of different types of challenges experienced by individuals, families, and communities.

In 2012, Jessica was hired as the Executive Director of Haven House and continued to work on local, statewide, and national initiatives focused on trauma and resilience. In 2015, Jessica was hired as Executive Director to lead a Seattle early parent support organization (PEPS).  There she guided a 35-year old Seattle institution through cultural transformation and strategic shifts to prioritize equity, inclusion and advocacy. In 2019, Jessica and her family decided it was time to make their way back “home.” They settled in Tulsa, OK, where Jessica launched Kindred Consulting and continues to provide support that helps leaders take their impact to the next level.

Jessica is passionate about community and is driven by the vision of a more equitable life for all. She believes that a community’s voice will drive relevant, innovative, and powerful solutions if we listen. It’s on us (organizations and leaders) to create the space to listen, reflect, and act.

The Family Cycle is a unique therapeutic model which was created at the Yale Child Study Center in order to treat abused children and their families. The model provides a clinical framework to facilitate the treatment of families with complex multigenerational trauma and promote mentalization in high-risk parents. It is informed by attachment theory, family systems theory, and current literature on reflective functioning. Over the years this model was implemented within the context of an intensive home-based, family-focused intervention and more.

Prof. Victoria Stob, MA, LCSW

Victoria Stob is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Social Work in the Yale Child Study Center. She specializes in integrating social science-based research and theory into practicable clinical applications for high-risk children and families living in multi-generational adversity.

In a supportive manner, a motivational interviewer encourages clients to talk about their need for change and their own reasons for wanting to change. The role of the interviewer is mainly to evoke a conversation about change and commitment. The interviewer listens and reflects back the client’s thoughts so that the client can hear their reasons and motivations expressed back to them.

As professionals working in agencies that focus on treating young, traumatized children, we talk about trauma to EVERYONE – to our staff, to the parents who bring their kids in for services, and to the children themselves. This talk will focus upon critical elements of such talk with each of these populations – as well as the pros and cons of becoming a “trauma magnet” when you are known as someone who encourages such conversations.

Haruv USA Workshops for City Year

August 6, 9 & 10, 2021 | 9am-12:30pm

Restorative Justice in Schools: There is a need for new accountability mechanisms in schools that disrupt the devastating effects of zero-tolerance discipline policies that have fed the school-to-prison pipeline in historically excluded communities while simultaneously transforming the school landscape more broadly. This workshop will explore the frameworks of restorative and transformative justice in the educational context, why there is a larger need to view justice in schools as an issue of systemic and structural racial inequity, and practical tips around implementation in the classroom.
Avital Kaye Tzadok, MSW, PhD; Gloria Miller, MSW; and Timantha Norman

Avital Kaye-Tzadok is currently a Haruv USA Director and a visiting scholar at OU. She is a social worker (BSW, MSW, Ph.D.) with sixteen years of direct practice experience with marginalized populations, mainly at-risk adolescent girls and young women in Israel. She is also a social work lecturer, a certified supervisor, and a group facilitator.

Gloria Miller holds a Master’s degree from the Anne and Henry Zarrow School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma. She is the CEO of GLMiller, LLC, where she partners with businesses and agencies to adopt a strengths-based prospective in management. She also facilitates social simulations centered around social justice topics for Haruv-USA at OU-Tulsa and serves as community faculty for the school of social work.

She seeks to utilize the power of truth-telling in written form to engage with untold histories and unnamed realities in an effort to drive dialogue and illuminate possibilities. Additionally, she is interested in exploring the intersections of law and public policy towards facilitating sustainable movement building and transformative community empowerment.
