FLIP IT® is a strategy that offers a simple, kind, strength-based, commonsense and effective four step process to address children’s day to day challenging behavior and to teach them self-control. The goal of FLIP IT® is to help you, as a professional or caregiver, to respond positively to everyday challenges in children ages 3-8.

Presenter’s bio:

Nicolle Moore, LMFT, IMH-E has been working with children and their families for over 20 years in various service sectors.  She is a collaborative mental health professional with a diverse history of clinical services, prevention and education, advocacy, outreach, and systems expansion. Her focus in Oklahoma has been on building early relational collaboration efforts, trauma informed and culturally responsive services, as well as use of a systems approach to understanding and serving young children and their families in the communities where they live. She currently works as the VP of Early Childhood Initiatives at the Parent Child Center of Tulsa, where she leads the HealthySteps program and IECMHC.

Jordan Gustin, LPC & Supervisor, IMH-E®(III) has been with DVIS since October of 2015. She started out as a Children’s Trauma Therapist then moved into the Children’s Trauma Program Manager and is now one of the Vice Presidents of Clinical Services. After receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Northeastern State University, Jordan earned an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regent University in Virginia Beach. While in Virginia Beach, she also completed training to become a Certified Traumatologist through the Green Cross Academy.  Throughout her career, she has primarily worked with children and adults who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence, physical abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, and other traumas or stressors.

Join us for an insightful workshop designed specifically for early childhood professionals. “Calming the Storm: De-escalation Techniques for Children Affected by Trauma” is an essential addition to our Early Childhood Professional Series, focusing on equipping educators, caregivers, and support staff with practical skills to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviors in young children who have experienced trauma.

This training equips early childhood professionals with essential knowledge and skills to identify, prevent, and respond effectively to child maltreatment within their environments. Through interactive sessions and case studies, participants will deepen their understanding of various forms of maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. Practical strategies for creating safe and supportive environments, building trust with children, and collaborating with families and authorities will be emphasized. This training is designed to empower professionals to safeguard the well-being of the children in their care and fulfill their duty as mandated reporters.

Lauren Conway, DO, is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, Tulsa. She is board certified through the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics. Dr. Conway lectures on child abuse and neglect at the local, state, and national levels.

Kimee Wind-Hummingbird, MSW, is a citizen of the Muscogee Nation with Cherokee descendancy, served the youth and families in the Child and Family programs of her two Nations for 22 years before joining the University of Montana’s National Native Children’s Trauma Center in 2021. In addition to considerable experience in Tribal Program administration, development and enhancement, she also has extensive expertise on the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Valerie Isaacs, LPC-S, IMH-E, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Endorsed Infant Mental Health Mentor – Clinical. She has worked with high trauma and court-involved populations for nearly 15 years in both urban and rural areas across Oklahoma. Valerie currently works as the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) Trainer and Consultant at OSU-CHS and is the owner/CEO of Valiant Counseling and Consulting in Broken Arrow, OK.

Stacey Leakey, PhD, IMH-E®

Dr. Leakey has worked in the field of Infant Mental Health (IMH) and child abuse prevention and treatment for the past 25 years. She is the owner and principal at O2 Consulting LLC, where she provides training in trauma-informed and evidence-based practices in infant and early childhood mental health, helping mental health systems and stakeholders apply this knowledge via regular consultation. She provides Reflective Consultation for professionals seeking Endorsement® as IMH professionals, for non-profit agency leadership, and for child welfare stakeholders. She was the Infant Mental Health Community Consultant for The Parent-Child Center of Tulsa for 6 years where she was responsible for building an infant mental health community of practice, training Child Welfare stakeholders and legal systems to apply the science of early childhood development in the courtroom, and preparing the community for IECMH interventions and practices. She is the consultant for the Tulsa County Safe Babies Court Team, the state’s first infant mental health specialty court where she supports judges, attorneys, law enforcement, and medical professionals in both their work and in recognizing the impact of their work on them personally.

Stacey served on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Association for Infant Mental Health (OK-AIMH) for many years and is Endorsed® as an Infant Mental Health Mentor by OK-AIMH. Dr. Leakey’s current focus is on the mitigation of secondary traumatic stress for individuals working in relationship-based interventions, and the enhancement of trauma stewardship to sustain the workforce in the helping professions, specifically through the utilization of reflective practice supports.

In order to attend to her own well-being, Stacey engages in regular mindfulness/meditation practice, yoga, floating, and dynamic group process. She has two sons, Aiden and Silas who provide a good mirror for her and keep her honest every day. She loves to garden, cook, and work at home on the family farm in rural Missouri, using these passions to refuel for her work.

This training is based on the award winning book “FLIP IT-Transforming Challenging Behavior” written by Rachel Wagner Sperry, MSW from the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. This training will provide an introduction and background to FLIP IT, as well as the prerequisites that are needed before using the FLIP IT strategy. Participants will learn the 4 steps of FLIP IT and will have an opportunity to practice the FLIP IT steps. Participants are expected to attend all 3 sessions (registration is for all three).

Session One: Tuesday, October 13th 1-2:45pm (including a 15 min break)

Session Two: Tuesday, October 20th 1-2:45pm (including a 15 min break)

Session Three: Tuesday, October 27th 1-2:45pm (including a 15 min break)
