November 7, 9am-4pm

OU-Tulsa, Building 3, room 3102 (4502 E 41st Street, Tulsa, OK 74135)

with Jessica Lawmaster, MSW

Jessica’s career began with stories. As a forensic interviewer early in her career in Oklahoma, she was on the receiving end of more than 700 accounts of abuse straight from the mouths of child victims. It was listening to these powerful stories that compelled her to study trauma through a broader lens. In 2008, Jessica packed up her belongings (and her dog) and moved to Alaska. She was hired to develop three new Children’s Advocacy Centers in the Kenai Peninsula region of Alaska. Developing child abuse response systems under the umbrella of Haven House, a domestic violence and sexual assault organization, provided Jessica with an optimal environment for continuing to connect the dots of the intersections of different types of challenges experienced by individuals, families, and communities. In 2012, Jessica was hired as the Executive Director of Haven House and continued to work on local, statewide, and national initiatives focused on trauma and resilience. In 2015, Jessica was hired as Executive Director to lead a Seattle early parent support organization (PEPS).  There she guided a 35-year old Seattle institution through cultural transformation and strategic shifts to prioritize equity, inclusion and advocacy. In 2019, Jessica and her family decided it was time to make their way back “home.” They settled in Tulsa, OK, where Jessica launched Kindred Consulting and continues to provide support that helps leaders take their impact to the next level. Jessica is passionate about community and is driven by the vision of a more equitable life for all. She believes that a community’s voice will drive relevant, innovative, and powerful solutions if we listen. It’s on us (organizations and leaders) to create the space to listen, reflect, and act.

Presenter’s bio

Jimmy Widdifield, Jr., MA, (he/him) is a Licensed Professional Counselor (Oklahoma) and training and technical assistance provider in child maltreatment, trauma, and adversity. He is the Project Director for the (TTA) for Child Abuse Professionals Project at the National Children’s Advocacy Center. Mr. Widdifield has extensive experience providing TTA locally, nationally, and internationally to child maltreatment professionals with an emphasis on the research and treatment of youth with problematic sexual behavior.

Workshop description

Children and adolescents with problematic or illegal sexual behavior typically engage in those behaviors with other youth in their family. Understandably, their behavior disrupts safety within the family network. With appropriate planning, supports, and interventions, all of which should include the caregivers, most children and adolescents with problematic sexual behavior can safely remain in their community and, if indicated, have contact with the other child and children in their family and social networks. This workshop will address a framework for considering level of treatment for children and adolescents with problematic or illegal sexual behavior, basic safety planning for those youth, and considerations for when to consider visitation with other children and reunification of families.

The training will be held in-person at the OU-Tulsa campus Learning Center on April 12, 2023 and is comprised of a morning and afternoon session.  All participants are asked to join us for the morning session, where we will explore the relationship between childhood trauma and nutrition. All participants should attend the morning session (9am-12pm). During this time we will explore:

  • The relationship between positive and adverse experiences and nourishment, including a deeper look at the effects of childhood trauma.
  • The professional implications of a practitioner’s/provider’s own relationship to food and self care.

Lunch break (12pm-12:45pm)

  • On-site lunch will be provided.

Afternoon session for direct service practitioners and program planners (12:45pm – 5pm):

  • Basic process and principles of a trauma-informed approach and how these principles may be applied to nutrition education and other community programs.
  • Trauma-informed engagement and facilitation strategies.

All registered participants will also receive access to a brief, self-paced introductory course on trauma-informed nutrition.  Participants are strongly encouraged to complete this course before the workshop. Toward the end of March, a welcome email from the online training platform, TalentLMS, will be sent with more details on how to access these online materials.

DVIS Suicide Assessment & Simulation Virtual Training

June 10, 2021 | 9am – 5pm Central

Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the United States; further, it is the 7th leading cause of death in Oklahoma. Trauma is a key driver of lifetime suicide risk. Data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows that persons experiencing four or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) having almost ten times the rate of suicide attempts as those experiencing none. Although health care and social services have had good intentions in caring for individuals at risk of suicide, the rising death rate shows that more must be done. This workshop will provide a brief overview of the elements of suicidality, including psychological and social elements.
