Presenter’s bio: DeJon Knapp is a licensed clinical social worker and Director of Haruv USA. Haruv USA is an international training institute focused on training students and professionals on the treatment, identification, and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Prior to her work at Haruv USA, DeJon worked for Oklahoma Human Services in Child Welfare, for Youth Services of Tulsa in Street Outreach, and served as the Vice President of Safe Housing at Domestic Violence Intervention Services. DeJon is also a board approved clinical supervisor and an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa where she teaches a course on child abuse & neglect.

Workshop description: This interactive workshop provides essential guidance on Oklahoma’s mandatory reporting laws, with a specific focus on recognizing and responding to signs of child maltreatment and the unique needs of unaccompanied minors. Participants will learn how to navigate reporting responsibilities ethically and effectively while supporting vulnerable children and youth within the context of homelessness. Case scenarios and local resources will be included to support practical application.

Workshop description: QIC-ChildRep is an evidence-based best practice model of child representation. This training was developed to advance the QIC-ChildRep Best Practice Model and integrates key aspects of Oklahoma child welfare law and practice, including Oklahoma practice standards, with the goal of advancing high quality legal representation for attorneys representing children in Oklahoma child welfare cases.

Timothy Michaels-Johnson, J.D. – Having earned his Juris Doctorate with Honors from the University of Tulsa College of Law in 2011, Timothy Michaels-Johnson focused his career in child welfare. He joined the District Attorney’s Office of Tulsa County and prosecuted deprived child cases for nearly 5 years. In July 2016, Michaels-Johnson joined Tulsa Lawyers for Children representing children and training TLC’s volunteer attorneys. He subsequently served as TLC’s third Executive Director until April 2024. Michaels-Johnson now assists with the development and roll out of Oklahoma’s new central office of parent and child representation as the Region 5 Managing Attorney for Child Representation with the Oklahoma Office of Family Representation. In addition, Michaels-Johnson has returned to the University of Tulsa College of Law as an adjunct professor teaching Juvenile Law and serves as a Commissioner on the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth.

Tara Glenn, LCSW, IMH-E® (III)– Tara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is an endorsed infant mental health clinician by the Oklahoma Association of Infant Mental Health. Tara’s work has focused on treating childhood sexual abuse and trauma, treating families with infants/young children who have experienced scary and confusing things or have experienced attachment disruptions, and serving adults with complex trauma histories. Tara is an EMDR trained therapist as well as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), and Circle of Security. Tara believes we are created for connection and with a purpose and wants to serve people so that any barriers to that fulfillment can be diminished.

Workshop description: An estimated 1 in 11 children in the U.S. alone will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. But it is a worldwide issue. While we cannot shield children from loss, we can guide them through their grief. Using a developmental perspective, the presentation will address what to expect at different ages and explore how children communicate their grief.  Based on current research and practice, attendees will learn the range of expected and problematic grief reactions, how adults can address key bereavement tasks, and a model for tiered interventions as well as a framework for using strategies to foster resilience. This is for individuals wanting to build their toolbox to best equip themselves when supporting grieving children.

Presenter’s Bio: Dr. Robin Goodman is a psychologist, art therapist, certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy and trained in Prolonged Grief Disorder. In addition to private practice, with special interest in medical illness, trauma, and grief, she is Associate Director of Public Education and Bereavement for the Child HELP Partnership at St. John’s University.  Previously she established child life and behavioral health programs at pediatric cancer services at Mt. Sinai and NYU Medical Center and served as Executive Director and bereavement program director for A Caring Hand Founded in Memory of Billy Esposito and Co-Director of the NYU Child Study Center 9/11 Child and Family Recovery Program. She has held leadership positions at various organizations including the National Child Traumatic Stress, New York State Psychological Association Disaster Response Network and American Art Therapy Association. She developed Making Connections ©, a child and family grief group curriculum. Committed to increasing mental health awareness, she has contributed to public education efforts and developed Caring for Kids After Trauma and Death: A Guide for Parents and Professionals. Valerie is a Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) trainer, DC:0-5 Clinical Training trainer, a Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and Facilitating Attuned Interactions supervisor in addition to being trained in a variety of evidence-based models for infant and early childhood mental health treatment and parenting.  Valerie currently works as the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) Trainer and Consultant at OSU-CHS and is the owner/CEO of Valiant Counseling and Consulting in Broken Arrow, OK. The focus of Valerie’s work is developing and delivering high quality IECMH training, reflective consultation, and relationship-based therapies.

Presenter’s Bio: Lauren Garder is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a decade of experience in mental health and victim services. The focus of Lauren’s career has been chronic trauma and victimization. Lauren has worked across the spectrum of services from hotlines to therapy to working in administration for the ODMHSAS overseeing trauma services and outpatient treatment for suicidality across the State. Lauren is now “back in the chair” in private practice in Oklahoma City providing therapy, expert witness, and consulting in her areas of expertise.

Workshop Description: “Trauma-Informed Care: It’s Who You Are” is designed to provide professionals in healthcare and social services with a foundational understanding of how to recognize and respond to the effects of trauma. This approach shifts the focus from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” emphasizing the importance of understanding, recognizing, and addressing the signs, symptoms, and risks associated with trauma. Participants will explore core concepts of trauma-informed care and be introduced to motivational interviewing techniques to better support the well-being and healing of individuals affected by trauma. This learning day offers practical tools and insights to foster safer, more empathetic environments in professional practice.

Dr. Elissa Brown is Professor of Psychology and Executive Director of the Child HELP (Heal, Empower, Learn, Prevent) Partnership at  St. John’s University. Her primary clinical and research interests include the prevention and treatment of child trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. She is the Director of a Category II site of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. She is a co-developer of Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, a treatment for family conflict and physical abuse and a certified trainer of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, a treatment for traumatized youth and their non-offending caregivers. Dr. Brown is a member of several national and international organizations dedicated to improving mental health services for traumatized children and served on the Board of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She recently received the Mark Chaffin Outstanding Research Career Achievement Award from the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
