Workshop description: An estimated 1 in 11 children in the U.S. alone will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. But it is a worldwide issue. While we cannot shield children from loss, we can guide them through their grief. Using a developmental perspective, the presentation will address what to expect at different ages and explore how children communicate their grief. Based on current research and practice, attendees will learn the range of expected and problematic grief reactions, how adults can address key bereavement tasks, and a model for tiered interventions as well as a framework for using strategies to foster resilience. This is for individuals wanting to build their toolbox to best equip themselves when supporting grieving children.
